Two years ago, I had an unforgettable journey to the summit of the Col du Galibier. The experience was exhilarating, challenging, and deeply rewarding, setting a benchmark for future adventures. Little did I know that this past weekend would bring another such monumental achievement: climbing Mont Ventoux.
The Ascent of Mont Ventoux
Known as the “Giant of Provence,” Mont Ventoux rises to 1,910 meters. Its reputation among cyclists is well-established, blending admiration and fear. The mountain’s stark, moon-like landscape and relentless gradients make it one of the most iconic and challenging climbs in the cycling world.
From the moment I arrived at the base, the excitement was tangible. The weather was ideal—clear, sunny skies with a gentle breeze.
About thirty colleagues gathered in the village of Vacqueyras two days prior. On Friday, we embarked on a warm-up lap to stretch our legs. It was then that I sensed Saturday would be a challenging day. On Saturday, I was up for breakfast at around 5:30 AM, ready to begin the adventure. Along with around half of my colleagues, I set off on the 128-kilometer journey, while the others tackled either more or slightly less distance.
The Climb Begins
Before the ascent, we went for a 65-kilometer warm-up, which included five cols. At approxi;ately 9:30 AM, our big adventure began.
The early stretch of the climb meandered gently through charming Provencal villages and verdant vineyards. Yet, as we progressed, the landscape transformed sharply. The incline became steeper, the air thinner, and the lush greenery was replaced by a desolate, rocky terrain. The distinctive white limestone of the summit, giving it a lunar-like appearance, loomed ahead, a stark reminder of the formidable challenge before us.
With each pedal stroke, we advanced. Every turn offered a fresh view, revealing both the landscape and our personal boundaries. It’s a solitary battle waged amidst thousands. Conversations with strangers emerged, offering encouragement to those who struggled.
Reaching the Summit
As I neared the summit, the gradient hit its steepest point. The final kilometers were brutal, with the infamous “Col des Tempêtes” living up to its name, as winds threatened to push us off balance. But the sight of the summit tower was a beacon of hope, pulling me onward.
At last, I reached the summit. The sensation was beyond words—a blend of fatigue, relief, sheer joy, and deep emotion. I had accomplished it. My thoughts were filled with my beloved grandfather, an fervent admirer of the Tour de France. Together, we had triumphed over Mont Ventoux.
Gratitude and Reflection
This climb was more than a physical challenge; it embodied the spirit of mutual support. I am profoundly grateful for the chance to go on this journey with my colleagues. Their encouragement and camaraderie transformed a daunting task into a memorable adventure. I extend my heartfelt thanks to Axxes for providing us with this incredible opportunity.
Reflecting on this achievement, I am reminded of the importance of perseverance, the strength found in unity, and the sheer joy of pursuing one’s passions. Climbing Mont Ventoux was a dream come true, a milestone in my cycling journey, and a memory I will cherish forever.
Thank you for joining me on this adventure. Here’s to many more climbs, challenges, and shared victories in the future!
Any suggestions to new challenges are more than welcome 😉
